Gina Alexis Rodriguez is the youngest among the four children of Magali and Gino Rodriguez, who are both Puerto Rican and worked as boxing referees. Like most Puerto Ricans, she grew up in a Catholic household and attended St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago’s Northwest Side’s Belmont Cragin area. She joined the salsa dance company Fantasia Juvenil when she was seven. After reaching 17, she began to focus on pursuing her acting career. 

Gina Rodriguez was one of thirteen hopefuls accepted into Columbia University’s Theatrical Collaboration, which helped her hone her acting skills. She studied at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Eventually, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2005 after four years of training at the Atlantic Theater Company and Experimental Theatre Wing.

Following her debut, she made guest appearances in Eleventh Hour, The Mentalist, The Mentalist, and Army Wives
