Britney Spears Behind The Camera: She’s Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman

Early Life

Britney Spears, the 40-year old pop star, needs little to no introduction, especially if you’re an avid follower of pop music or if you’ve been keeping tabs with the recent events surrounding her life. But how many fans of pop music know much about her life? There are probably a lot, but there are also some important things many tend to forget or overlook. So, let’s take a quick look at her early life.

While Britney Spears is known as an all-American blonde girl, her grandmother was English, and there’s also some Maltese in her lineage, coming from her great-great-grandfathers from her mother’s side. She grew up in a religious and socially conservative evangelical Protestant household and found herself singing in a church choir as a young girl. Even if she is now known for her “baby-sounding singing voice”, she actually grew up belting to Whitney Houston’s songs, which was how she auditioned and got signed to her first label.

Career And Public Image

Britney Spears’ career and influence in pop music are so massive that it would take forever to list her influence in pop culture. In a nutshell, her career began in 1998 when she released her debut album …Baby One More Time, which broke the charts and outperformed the majority of the musical acts that time. With her catchy songs, outfits that the public deemed “too racy” or “too sexy”, she became a worldwide musical sensation.

Britney Spears’s Plastic Surgery

Besides her outfits, Britney Spears’s plastic surgery was also at the center of all the controversies surrounding her much-followed life. These rumors were trending topics alongside her sister Jamie Lynne Spears’ plastic surgery who also had to endure the public’s scrutiny as a result of being the sister of the world’s biggest pop star. Her breast augmentation was, at one point, the most talked-about gossip like Denise Richards’ surgeries. Many speculated she had these operations to fit into the industry’s beauty standards.

But these scandals didn’t stop her from dropping her era-defining sophomore album Oops!… I Did It Again, her movie Crossroads, more albums, scandals, and controversies. During this time, she also stopped belting her songs and started singing in what many call her signature “baby voice”. Many of her fans also think that her managers forced her to sing this way to become more accessible compared to her pop star rival Christina Aguilera.

Conservatorship And The Free Britney Movement

Britney Spears’ relationships and marriages were also widely-covered and talked about that her personal life ceased becoming personal. In 2007, amidst the media frenzy surrounding her life, she had a mental breakdown that caused her to be in rehab, shave her hair off, and lose custody of her children to her ex-husband Kevin Federline.

From 2008 until 2021, she was placed under a conservatorship citing her mental conditions as the reasons, which deems her unfit to handle her life’s affairs. Being under such conservatorship led by her father Jamie Spears, alongside accomplices like her sister Jamie Lynn Spears and mother Lynne Spears, has put her in an “overprotected” life controlled by all the “toxic” people surrounding her.

After thirteen years of not having access to her finances and properties and not being allowed to make her own decisions, the conservatorship finally ended with the help of her fans and their “Free Britney” movement. Amid other rumors of Britney Spears’ nose job and her mental state, she is now a free woman, and she posted on her Instagram (@britneyspears) her gratitude that she can now drive her car and use her credit cards to “buy candles”. All’s well that ends well, and we couldn’t be happier for her!
