Growing up in New York with an immigrant family during that time wasn’t the most pleasant thing in the world, so they moved to Brewster, New York when he was 11 years old. While he was starting to adapt to his new life in this new city, he began attending Broadway plays in high school, one of his first-ever experiences in performing that also became an inspiration for him.
When he was studying, Michael Imperioli had different plans for his life, and he originally intended to study pre-med at Columbia University. His plans detoured when he got into the State University of New York in Albany. Before starting his college education, he enrolled in Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute to hone his acting skills.

Michael Imperioli’s first credited acting role was for the film Alexa and Lean on Me in 1989. A year after that, he was able to land a role in Goodfellas, a film that shows the life of an Irish-Italian American, Henry Hill. Getting a role in a major film that early in his career was a big thing for him, and it also foreshadows his future role in The Sopranos.
