Early Life

Yo Gotti’s birth name is Mario Sentell Giden Mims (Mario Mims). Born May 19, 1981 in Memphis, Tennesse, he is the third child of a middle-class family. His father was a Zimbabwe descendant and worked as a sports coach, while his mother was of South African origin.

Mario didn’t have a peaceful childhood growing up in the northern part of Memphis, particularly the Ridge Crest housing project area. After all, this area is notorious for its crime, violence, and gangster-ridden neighborhoods. When he was in the 2nd grade, his parents, uncle, and aunt were arrested. The boy had no choice but to fend for himself. Thus, he started thugging on the streets. Later, Mario was drawn to music and began rapping with his gang around Memphis during the 90s.

Career As A Rapper

Like Styles P, Yo Gotti is best known as an American rapper. In 1996, Mario released his first underground tape Youngsta’ On A Come Up under the alias Lil’ Yo. He placed the tape on consignment at local mom & pop record stores and hustled it out the trunk. The tape created a smash hit on the street, making him one of Memphis’s most notable street rappers after one night.

As he came out of the hip-hop school, Dirty South, and became ‘Yo Gotti’, the rapper had got himself an impressive portfolio. His stage name was inspired by John Gotti, a famous Mafioso in New York. This is when he signed with Inevitable label and released ‘Da Dope Game 2 Da Rap Game’ It sold so well that Select-O-Hits, a local independent distributor had to offer Gotti a small deal. The young rapper quickly doubled his fan base without any marketing or promotion.

It didn’t take long for him to rise to prominence as one of the city’s top rappers. Aside from appearing on the cover of Murderdog Magazine together with his idols Kingpin Skinny Pimp and Al Kapone, the album was named the year’s top indie record in 2000. Thanks to this record, Gotti was able to release two more albums in the next two years with Inevitable label. Self Explanatory was released in 2001, and Block Burnin’, Vol. 1 was released in 2002.

Since his popularity kept increasing, bigger labels began to notice the young talent. In 2003, Gotti signed with TVT and released another awesome album, ‘Life’. Ironically, ‘Life’ was all about the gangster’s lifestyle and the journey to pursue his passion. Like he mentioned in an interview, the album sold between 40,000 and 50,000 copies, which is a respectable achievement for an indie label.

On January 12, 2012, Yo Gotti’s first major-label album Live From The Kitchen signed with RCA Records & Polo Grounds Music was released. The album went platinum in the United States, selling 36,000 copies. It came in at number 12 on the Billboard 200.

As of 2021, the 40-year-old rapper had released ten studio albums, 22 mixtapes, and 47 singles (plus 21 as a featured artist). Yo Gotti also founded his own record label, Collective Music Group (CMG), where he jokingly claimed to ‘play all the positions. The label has been growing substantially over the years and is now home to artists like Blac Youngsta, 42 Dugg, and Moneybagg Yo

Rapping Style

From the early days, iconic rappers such as Master P, Dr. Dre, and Tupac Shakur have inspired Gotti’s rapping style. In large part, his music leans toward the Gangsta style. However, it is also influenced by non-Southern and Southern hip-hop music, as a result of his time spent in Dirty South.

Yo Gotti didn’t have the most pleasant upbringing, and his lyrics as a rapper were heavily influenced by this background. Many of his tracks are based solely on Memphis’ chaotic neighborhoods and the gangster lifestyle. As a result, his lyrics often depict the dangers of street living and also are sexually explicit.

In fact, the rapper received much criticism for proudly presenting his past and rapping over and over about selling drugs. Yo Gotti’s achievements as a rapper raise concerns about negative influences in pop culture. But does he have any plan to switch up his style and reach a larger audience? The answer is no. According to Gotti, his credibility with loyal underground supporters is more valuable than gold or platinum status.

“The one thing that you have to understand is that when you create a fan base off of street product the last thing you wanna do is disrespect them by changing because of the record companies and stuff like that”, said the famous rapper,  “When you do that, you change what created you”.

Yo Gotti’s Notable Songs

Throughout his career, the multiplatinum rapper has released dozens of memorable songs and mixtapes. Let’s take a look at Yo Gotti’s top 5 tracks of all time:

Yo Gotti’s second track from his 9th studio album I Still Am, “Juice,” was released on October 10th, 2017. At its peak, the song was ranked 34th and 35th on the Billboard Rhythmic and Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart respectively. On the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, it also peaked at number 90. The Recording Industry Association of America gave “Juice” a gold certification, indicating sales of more than 500,000 units nationwide.

Talking about the making of “Juice”, Gotti said that he set out to write a song that could deliver the cheerful vibe that immediately made people feel partying. “I like to make music from a personal standpoint, and the music that feels good to me, and when the music becomes big, it’s even better because it’s an even more organic feeling than when you, like, tried to make the hit record. When the record turns out to be as big as ‘Juice’, that’s a great feeling”, he told Billboard.

Bible (Feat. Lil Wayne)

‘Bible’ was featured in Yo Gotti’s 8th studio album ‘The Art Of Hustle’. This time, he teamed up with Lil Wayne to create this trap-heavy track. The song’s title suggests it’s a hymn, but in fact, it’s a homage to guns.

The Memphis rapper raps about his firearms, drugs, and having sex in the shower over gunshots and futuristic noises with a trap beat. Meanwhile, Weezy serves up his signature cocktail of sports bars, sex similes, and drug lines. Even though the two rappers collaborated many times in the past, their chemistry was said to be most dynamic in ‘Bible’.

Act Right (Feat. Jeezy, YG)

‘Act Right’ was released on July 23, 2013. Yo Gotti’s sixth studio album ‘I Am’ featured it as the first single. The rapper collaborated with the American duo Jeezy and YG in this track. The producer behind ‘Act Right’ was HBK Gang member P-Lo. After release, the song was ranked 100th on the Billboard Hot 100.

Gotti shared with MTV that ‘Act Right’ was shot in Oakland. His crew visited the house of Mac Dre, a renowned Oakland rapper who was killed during a drive-by shooting in 2004. Until now, the murder remains a cold case. Gotti gives a shout-out to the late rapper in the song’s opening verse. He rhymes:

“I’m going back, back to the Bay

Rest in peace Mac Dre.”

Rake It Up (Feat. Nikki Minaj)

‘Rake It Up’ is Yo Gotti’s collaborative mixtape with producer  Mike WiLL Made-It. It features a verse by Nicki Minaj and is used as the first single of the album ‘I Still Am’. The song was released on June 1st, 2017, while the official music video premiered on August 21st on Tidal.

After the release, the song quickly climbed to the 8th position on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking it Yo Gotti’s first hit on top 10 and his biggest commercial triumph.

Although the song’s lyrics are all about being in a strip club, it poses an uplifting message. “This song ain’t just ’cause you a stripper,” said the rapper, “I’m telling all females just get money. That’s just sex appeal in a sense like, every woman has that. They were born with that s–t. You don’t gotta teach them that. She can be the stiffest or the shyest or whatever. But for the right nigga, she gonna break it down. She gonna bag it up.”

Yo Gotti – Rake It Up

Yo Gotti’s song “Errrbody” was released on July 10th, 2014 with the Epic Records label. In the song, Gotti raps about mainstream rappers sounding the same and trying to be someone they aren’t despite their status. The single was ranked 29th and 98th in the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Songs and Hot 100 charts, respectively. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it a Gold certification, indicating sales of more than 500,000 copies in the US.

After two decades of skating through the rap game, the Memphis rapper has witnessed everything. Luxurious cars and extravagant clothes are no longer matter. Compliments and snubs are less meaningful than ever. In a world where everyone is following the same path, it’s nearly impossible to hear, see, or do something new. In this sense, ‘Errbody’ is a bitter, sarcastic harangue on how dispersed the crowd has become: Everybody should stop trying to change just for fame.
