Love, Simon

Love, Simon
Love, Simon – a flawlewss love story. Source: m.media-amazon.com

Review

Simon Spier has always been an outsider. All he wants is to be normal, but his life isn’t quite working out that way.

Simon Spier is a typical high school student… he has a crush on a girl, joins the soccer team, and hangs out with his best friend, Nick. But there’s something that Simon’s hiding from everyone, even himself: he’s gay. When another student outs him in front of the whole school, Simon must face his fears to prove to everyone that who you love doesn’t define who you are.

Interestingly, the film provokes our best treasures in life: romantic partners, family, and friends. Stay true to who you are and enjoy happiness. These values last forever and they make ‘Love, Simon’ deserve a solid position on our recommended dating movies list or ‘good movies to watch when bored‘ collection.

Audience’s Comment

And what a joy that is! Everyone needs an idealized romance to aim for, and here’s one for gay teenagers. Love, Simon is uncomplicated by guilt, rejection, or thoughts of suicide. There’s nothing dark or twisted here. Simon isn’t damaged; he’s just a kid. This movie is a celebration of a human triumph, not of the movie itself but of the society that can finally produce it. Great music too.

The Grand Hotel Budapest

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the story of a European hotel
The Grand Hotel Budapest – an infamous hotel between wars. Source: reviewphim.net

Review

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the story of a European hotel where nothing is what it appears to be. The film follows Gustave H, an infamous concierge at this famous hotel between wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most reliable friend. There are adventures involved in stealing and recovering a priceless Renaissance painting and fighting for an immense family fortune – all against the backdrop of Europe quickly changing.

As much as the film catches on angles of a cinematic sweet, it does so to grip the very human nature. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is about how we project an image to get what we want, and there are consequences for not being honest. Near the end of this movie, one character remarks admiringly that another person kept up their illusion amazingly well – which says something about our species’ ability to do anything they can just to survive. It’s an illusion, but it’s not a lie!

Overall, the film is one of escape and ecstasy for the characters as well as the audience. It’s eye candy and fascinating among the best dating movies for one (or many) dates.

Audience’s Comment

“Great movie with an impressive cast. I’ve never understood what “multi format” meant when it came to dvd’s until this movie. The film begins by telling you to set the screen to 16X9…huh? Well, the film starts out in widescreen, goes to standard format for most of the film, and then back to widescreen. I guess I am old because I didn’t notice this business until the end of the film… go figure. I was going to return the dvd because I thought a mistake was made somewhere down the production line. And I even wrote a 3 star review earlier in the day because the whole film wasn’t in widescreen. I took a break from the film for a few hours before coming back to it… I went out of the room to write the previous review and start the return paperwork. Then I came back hours later to finish watching the film and then had my EUREKA moment.

I really enjoyed this movie. It’s not slapstick, it’s just good comedy. You have to pay attention to enjoy this comedy. I’m not returning my copy as I had previously planned to do.”

About Time

About Time
How does Tim conquer his woman in dream? Source: qph.fs.quoracdn.net

Review

Award-winning filmmaker, Richard Curtis has been crafting his signature voice in the film industry for more than three decades. In “About Time”, Curtis gives us a personal glimpse into some of the extraordinary journeys that accompany our everyday lives.

The movie starts with Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson), who his father had always told about traveling through time and how he can’t change history but instead changes what happens or has happened to him. Tim decides to make a better world for himself by getting a girlfriend, which doesn’t exactly work out as planned at first, thanks to one wrong turn after another on the way there!

Tim moves from Cornwall to London with the hope of becoming a lawyer, but after meeting Mary in his new place of residence, he falls in love. An unfortunate incident ends up meaning that Tim has never met her before- so they meet again and again until eventually she is won over by him. He then plans an elaborate proposal for their wedding using time travel to prevent any embarrassing speeches or professional disasters that may have arisen otherwise.

Afterward, however, Tim learns more about what can be accomplished through time travel and its potential dangers as well. It’s not always possible to save oneself or loved ones from sorrows or upsets beyond the control even when one has access to such power as time-traveling does! Another great candidate for your ‘Neflix and chill’ time from our dating movies set.

Audience’s Comment

“There’s something about it that’s so perfectly heartwarming and straightforward, even though time traveling is involved. You would think it would seem so far fetched that the story would be completely unbelievable. But the beauty of this movie is it acknowledges how ridiculous it is, embraces the humor and treats it as a fact of life rather than magical revelation.

Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams are amazing together. Bill Nighy never disappoints either. Rarely is there a movie where the ultimate goal is to be happy, live a happy life, and love all those around you. It sounds so simple and boring, but it’s beautiful and amazing. I eventually made my fiance watch the movie, and *surprise* he didn’t fall asleep! He loved it too. The musical score is stellar. We ended up dancing to How Long Will I Love you for our first dance on our wedding day. Maybe I’m a sap, but something about this movie tugs at the heartstrings and in the best way possible. It’s nice to see a movie that focuses on the good, positive and happy and does it in a way that is believable and likable. Plus it’s hilarious.”

Begin Again

Begin Again
Let ‘Begin Again’ be the reason to enjoy your me-time at home! Source: m.media-amazon.com

Review

From the writer-director of Academy Award®-winner ONCE, Begin Again is another great film from this dating movies batch. It reveals a joyous and surprisingly comedic exploration of love, music and what it means to be alive.

Frank (Mark Ruffalo) is a disgraced record-label exec who finds himself at rock bottom. He heads home to regroup with his two young children, only to be surprised by an old flame, record store owner Maya (Keira Knightley). Maya’s patient optimism smoothes over Frank’s rough edges. But when their collaboration starts to take off, they face tough questions about what each is willing to sacrifice in order to attain success.

Audience’s Comment

I really enjoyed this movie. Kiera Knightly and Mark Ruffalo are two of my favorite actors and they had absolutely amazing chemistry in this film. Kiera Knightly seems to have great chemistry opposite all of her male costars but this match up was exceptional. I loved the concept of the movie and how it was produced and the free spirited nature that was present in both the main characters was fun to watch. I was looking for a light hearted, fun movie and I found it in this one.

Her

Her
‘Her’ of Spike Jonze is undoubtedly one of the good-read writings of all time! Source: miro.medium.com

Review

Earning the Academy Award® winner for Best Screenplay (directed by Spike Jonze and starring Joaquin Phoenix), Her is a love story that reveals the evolving intimacy in today’s relationships. Theodore (Phoenix) is a lonely writer who spends his days writing personal letters for others and inventing the perfect artificial intelligence in a not-too-distant future. As he develops an intimate relationship with his operating system’s intuitive human-like intelligence, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), he begins to.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, this heart-wrenching love story is one of the most acclaimed films in recent memory. It’s among the best movies to watch when you re bored too.

Audience’s Comment

“Her” is an original movie by the cult writer and director Spike Jonze. The story is emotional and the viewer shares the feelings of love of Theodore and Samantha. The plot is developed in a future not far from the present days and it is easy to understand the need of a writer to write letters since the persons are too individualist, walking on the streets talking to their computers, cellphones or tablets and certainly incapable to write letters with feelings. The conclusion is predictable since fortunately we are still humans.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

Crazy, Stupid, Love
‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ will be your spirit food after a long tiring day. Source: i.pinimg.com

Review

Searching for love in today’s complicated world has never been easy. A Hollywood romantic comedy, Crazy, Stupid, Love is a refreshing and comical take on a classic love triangle. Steve Carell plays Cal Weaver, a man in his 40s whose wife Emily (Julianne Moore) asks for a divorce. He must find a way to keep his family together as he gains some insight into what he has been missing with the help of Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), who teaches him how to woo women at bars.

The film seems happy and carefree on the surface, but some touching and true moments will change your perspective of life.

Audience’s Comment

There are some genuine laugh-out-loud moments and the film is straight to the point. The cast is great and all work together well, the plot is fresh and clever and it really was one of the best romantic comedies I have seen (haven’t seen many but still) – Would recommend this film to anyone.

500 Days of Summer

Review

Love can both be life-affirming and also, at times, it can threaten our lives. 500 Days of Summer takes you through the ultimate highs and crushing lows of falling head over heels. You will find out that your partner isn’t quite so smitten with you as much as they were before, though! What would you do if your girlfriend broke up with you and started dating someone else?

Well, the hopeless romantic Tom Hansen tries to win her back. It takes him time but eventually delivers an important lesson that we all should keep in mind: when relationships end, sometimes it just means they weren’t meant for each other. In many cases, breaking was the best for both people anyways… heartbreak might feel extreme at first, but this pain will heal over time too! “500 Days Of Summer” is one of the best gift in our dating movies collection.

Audience’s Comment

Wonderful movie. From the trailer it may appear like your typical boringly predictable romantic comedy, but in reality is a great comedy-drama, with great meaning and relevance, and an amazing twist.

Clever plot – not at all predictable, and very original. Direction is equally innovative, switching between different periods of time deftly, seamlessly and to the betterment of the movie.

The choice of lead actors was inspired. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are superb in the lead roles. The chemistry is spot-on, and both are suitably quirky and non-mainstream, avoiding it becoming a common-or-garden shmaltzy romance.

Topping it all off is a superb soundtrack. The music, excellent in isolation, is integrated perfectly into the movie, and is not overdone.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Review

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a whimsical romantic-comedy film of dating movies about one man’s journey to move on from the love of his life. Peter is utterly distraught when his girlfriend Sarah Marshall dumps him for someone else after he proposed to her. He weeps, he rails, and then laments her betrayal.

Then, his step-brother Brian advises a vacation, so Peter heads to Oahu. He catches Sarah taking the same vacation resort with her new boyfriend as he’s checking in. Suddenly, the dream vacation turns into a nightmare vacation.

Obviously, Peter’s ego takes a huge hit again. Fortunately, he finds a new love interest there. Will Sarah realize her loss, and what’s about Rachel? Trigger your partner’s curiosity to find out these answers from this unexpected romance-comedy story.

Audience’s Comment

This is a romantic comedy about a man who got dumped by his famous girlfriend. He escapes to Hawaii for a holiday, only to see her there with another guy.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is mostly a typical romantic comedy, with a guy having to decide which attractive ladies to have a relationship with. The portrayal of emotions he goes through is quite deep for a romantic comedy, but still, the film maintains a light-hearted attitude and delivers laughs. Mila Kunis is attractive and sexy, she is right for the role. Kristen Bell’s feelings, especially towards the end of the film, are well expressed, making me feel a little sorry for her character.

One interesting thing about “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is that it features quite a bit of male frontal nudity from Peter the leading man. Russell Brand also is not so shy about his body, but not to that extent.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is an adequate romantic comedy. It’s not groundbreaking, but it is a good watch.

Juno

Juno

Review

It’s the end of the world as we know it. Juno is a self-sufficient teenage girl in an unplanned pregnancy with her best friend, Bleeker. Her mother (Oscar winner J.K. Simmons) is more supportive than Juno’s father (Oscar nominee Jason Bateman).

To avoid being told what to do with the child, she chooses a couple from an ad in PennySaver and tells them about herself – it turns out both parents were looking for someone like Juno! It seems like she’s making it work in her own unique style until she starts to question if she’s putting her child’s future at risk. As the year goes on, will this plan work? Will you be able to improvise? What about Bleeker?

Audience’s Comment

Juno” is an incredibly cute movie, and for once I don’t even mean that in a patronising sense. If the movie universe was some sort of gigantic petting zoo, “Juno” would be the adorable little lamb standing in the corner making the jealous other lambs look like death incarnate. It’s not a sugary sweet tale by any means, in fact it’s a real down to earth kind of story that’s not always pretty, but the approach to it couldn’t be more right. It’s humble, it’s little, it’s low-budget, and that’s exactly what makes it so great. What I also liked about it, hell what I like about a lot of independent movies, is that it’s never predictable. There is no formula, you don’t know what’s coming, you don’t sit there quietly ticking of all the clichés: you just enjoy yourself tremendously.

Finally, one last addition to the heap of praise and I swear I’ll stop: it’s been ages since I’ve seen an ending scene this beautiful. It’s exactly the way you want it to be, and the camera zooming out at a barely noticeable speed is a brilliant touch. I quite liked “Juno”.

The Notebook

The Notebook
Behind every great love is a great story. Source: heomephim.files

Review

The Notebook is one of the most romantic love stories you will ever read. When Noah and Allie first meet, they are young and innocent, and the intensity of their love is immediate. They spend one summer together, exploring New York City. As they fall more deeply in love, Allie finds she can’t keep her promise to leave him. Their story unfolds through the years, never losing its power or their hopes for the future.

Audience’s Comment

I went to see this film with my sister and my Mum, and we were the only ones in the cinema. Not the best start, but I continued to watch it anyway and am so glad I did. This is probably one of the most beautiful and romantic dating movies I have ever seen! From the two characters’ relationship to their surroundings, every scene is breathtaking!

The Notebook tells the story of a summer romance that turns into a romance never to be forgotten. Allie and Noah are the two lead characters, and they are wonderful. You immediately fall in love with the characters, and you want to follow every step of their doomed love story. it is one of the greatest love stories ever told. Look out for the lake scene, unbelievable! I came out of the cinema wanting to go back in again and watch it all over again. It feels like you are reading a diary watching this film, that’s how detailed and wonderful this film is. Cannot really give too much away about the story, all I can say is if you haven’t seen this film yet, be sure to see it. I cannot think of a film more perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Lost In Translation

Review

Academy Award-winning writer Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Golden Globe-winner Bill Murray (The Royal Tenenbaums) deliver an elegant, modern love story about two strangers who meet in Tokyo. They spend an evening together, only to realize they may never see each other again. It is easy to see why it was nominated for so many awards: Murray’s performance as the aging star is superb, and Bill Murrays’s portrayal of a Japanese TV show host is hilarious.

Audience’s Comment

This cinematic gem is so subdued that you might have missed it the first time around. The hype around Murray’s performance is completely warranted, his nuance and restraint are so controlled that you are drawn into the character without ever thinking “hey, that’s great acting.” Coppola’s writing, directing, and soundtrack blend seamlessly and effortlessly. This movie never feels overwrought or pretentious IMHO though others may disagree. It’s simply a beautiful love story rendered with care, intelligence, and subtle humor. A rare perfect film.

Life Is Beautiful

Life Is Beautiful
Life is beautiful’ is all about a heart-touching story in World War II. Source: wallpapercave.com

Review

Based on the true story of Holocaust survivor Roman Vishniac, Life Is Beautiful tells the tale of an open-minded Jewish waiter and his son who become victims of Nazi Germany. The film follows the father’s courageous journey as he adopts a perfect blend of will, wit, and creativity to shelter his son from potential threats inside the camp.

Life Is Beautiful is a story of death and survival, humor and hope. This is a true story about the power of the human spirit to endure the unendurable and triumph over evil.

Sure, the film is comedic in nature, but you can’t help but realize all of the enormous losses suffered by those at concentration camps during WWII. It even has scenes as extreme as any scene from Schindler’s List! Emotional by nature, Life Is Beautiful should ne on top of your dating movies list.

Audience’s Comment

I find it sad that so many people are so narrow-minded that they will not watch a movie that is black and white or, in this case, is subtitled. I feel sorry for people who refuse to watch a movie like Life Is Beautiful just because it is a foreign film. They have no idea what a beautifully acted and directed film this is, and they’ll never know what an amazing experience they are missing.

Review

The film follows the long-term friendship of Harry Burns and Sally Albright. The two meet unexpectedly on a trip to New York after college graduation. The two have known each other for years, but they fear intimacy would spoil their friendship. As their paths diverge in separate directions, they meet unintentionally over and over again, causing them to reconsider their feelings. This option reflects the most stunning love among our best dating movies so far.

Audience’s Comment

One of my favorites. Today’s romantic comedies are full of lazy writing and one-dimensional roles that are more like caricatures, with the “goofy”, lovable, light-hearted guy and uptight, unlikable woman. Yawn. These two characters are likable and you see them evolve, as individuals and within the context of their relationship. Wonderfully written and portrayed. I love this movie.
