On January 6, 1984, Kate McKinnon was born to Laura Campbell and Michael Thomas Berthold. Her mother was an educator, and her father, an architect, raised her on Long Island in Sea Cliff, New York. While not many people know it, McKinnon is a multi-instrumentalist who began playing the piano at five years old. And if that is a surprising fact about her, you should know she also learned to play the cello when she was twelve and the guitar when she was fifteen. But it was her younger sister, Emily Lynne, who inspired her to consider pursuing comedy and acting. 

Kate McKinnon is also known for her performances that feature her using different accents, making her impersonations more impeccable. In many of her interviews, she said that her talent in imitating accents started in fifth grade when she auditioned for her school’s event and used an English accent. After receiving her high school diploma from North Shore High School in 2002, McKinnon went to Columbia University and earned her bachelor’s degree in theatre in 2006. Kate McKinnon’s breakthrough in the industry started when she joined the cast of The Big Gay Sketch Show in 2007, where she would be a regular for three seasons. She has also been performing live sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City since 2008.
