How To Become A Legend? (Steven Van Zandt Edition)

From A Massachusetts Boy

Steven Lento came to life on Nov 22nd, 1950, in the small town of Winthrop, MA.

Despite being born with Italian ancestors, his mom wedded William Brewster Van Zandt. So when Steven Lento adopted his stepdad’s surname, Steven’s Italian name turned into Steven Van Zandt.

After his mom’s 2nd marriage, he moved to New Jersey with his mom and stepdad when he was seven years old. Van Zandt began playing the guitar at an early stage. As the Beatles and Rolling Stones’ concerts strongly impressed the young boy, he formed his first band, the Whirlwinds, when he was only 14 years old.

Given that this group didn’t hold on for long, he started the second named the Mates one year afterward and entered a third named the Shadows in 1966.

Interestingly, Van Zandt was formerly sent home because of his shaggy hairstyle throughout this phase.

Although his mom had to persuade him a lot, he ultimately went back to school and finished his study in 1968.

There was also a tragedic event that happened to this talented celebrity when he was young. In his adolescence, he got severe scars on his forehead due to a car accident that got him slammed through a windshield. Thus, this big star usually uses caps or headbands to conceal his injuries.

To A Young Music Talent

Van Zandt met Bruce Springsteen in a New Jersey bar earlier in his singing journey and became friends with him. With this predestined relationship, he afterward formed a group with Bruce under the name of Steel Mill and the Bruce Springsteen Band.

In the earlier 1970s, Van Zandt still concentrated on his intended music path despite working in construction. Indeed, he remained in a close-knit relationship with a famous band called The Dovells.

In 1973, after going tours alongside The Dovells, fans began to notice Van Zandt sporting Hawaiian outfits in the cold. As a result, he gained the moniker “Miami Steve.”

Van Zandt developed bands such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, plus The Miami Horns several years later. So things carried on until 1975, the last group played with Bruce Springsteen, earning Steven a position in the E Street Band.

Later on, Bruce praised Van Zandt for assisting him in building the iconic guitar riff in the track “Born to Run.” After the E Street Band traveled around the globe for several years afterward, he earned himself the role of lead guitarist.

Check his Born to Run track here:

Van Zandt quit the E Street Band in 1984, stating that his job was over. He indicated that he had just entered the group to support Bruce in achieving recognition and popularity and that when Van Zandt met that target, he saw no need to continue.

Van Zandt did, eventually, rejoin the group after its regular reassembly in 1999. However, he served primarily as a supporting rhythmic guitarist instead of a lead guitarist.

Besides, Van Zandt also possesses significant experience as a composer, arranger, and producer, like Tory Lanez, apart from his role in the E Street Band. He subsequently became a solo singer, launching his first record, “Men Without Women.”

This CD and his following one, “Voice of America,” received considerable critical acclaim. Unfortunately, Steven’s affluence as a solo artist was not as prominent given these rave reviews.

Transform Into An Outstanding Actor

Steven Van Zandt made his screen debut in 1999 when he was invited to try out for “The Sopranos.” After witnessing his speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, original director David Chase persuaded him to apply for the role.

Van Zandt first applied for the character of Tony Soprano. However, HBO was afraid of casting an untrained actor for the lead character. In the end, Chase developed a whole new character for Van Zandt so that he could continue to appear in the series.

Van Zandt eventually took the role of Silvio Dante, a “consigliere” or “leader” in the Sopranos’ famous New Jersey mafia gang. As Van Zandt came on the field as an actor with practically no formal training, the choice to place him in a prominent part on “The Sopranos” was among the oddest in the cinematic industry.

But somehow, everything worked out. During the program, Van Dantz played a crucial role in “The Sopranos” and helped the series become one of the best TV series ever produced.
