Matthew McConaughey’s Wolf Of Wall Street Chant

There is no doubt that Matthew McConaughey is the King Midas of the film industry as every role he touches turns to gold, and his role in Martin Scorsese’s film is no different. Even if he is in the film for a limited time, his scene where his character Mark Hanna was having lunch with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort to welcome him to Wall Street became iconic. McConaughey explained in his YouTube channel that every time he reads the scripts of his films, there would be a few lines that would allow his imagination to soar and explore his role more by improvising. He calls these “launchpad lines,” which he mostly had in his Magic Mike and Dazed and Confused characters.

When McConaughey read about his role as Mark Hanna is a typical Wall Street drugs-obsessed businessman, he knew he had to add flavor to it by using his weird chant he has created for himself. The chant is actually part of Matthew McConaughey’s acting ritual or preparation – some sort of relaxation routine to get him in character before shooting his scenes. He claims that doing this before filming helps him get out of his thoughts, and he did it in front of Leonardo DiCaprio while they were rehearsing the lunch scene. The latter saw the potential it could bring to the film and suggested that Martin Scorsese retake the scene and include it in the film. So they redid the scene, and the actor nailed it in one take, and the rest is The Wolf of Wall Street history.

The Legacy Of The Wolf Of Wall Street

The Wolf Of Wall Street’s awards are plentiful, and it remains one of the most acclaimed films of Martin Scorsese. Some of the accolades it received include five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Jonah Hill. While Matthew McConaughey’s Wolf Of Wall Street appearance also deserved a nomination at the very least, the Academy Awards snubbed him.

The Guinness Book of World Records has also ranked The Wolf of Wall Street as the film with the most number of swearing. It is also a controversial film for its explicit sexual content, drug use, animal props, and being morally ambiguous in depicting Jordan Belfort’s crimes. Of course, there’s also Margot Robbie in her breakout role as Naomi Lapaglia, who was so stunning that Jonah Hill’s Donnie Azoff said, “I would let that girl give me f**king AIDS.” So, yes, that’s what we mean by it being controversial.

DiCaprio’s “Sell me this pen,” McConaughey’s chant, and their Fugazi Wolf of Wall Street, and many more were also some of the lines and scenes that the film will always be known for. Now, that’s how you make a film – you make it controversial, fun, random, spontaneous, explicit, and intense. Like what one of the film’s characters says to DiCaprio’s role in one scene, “Risk is what keeps us young.” And it’s also what makes a great film.
