Godfather Of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2 – A Great Story Of A Real Gangster

When it comes to the mafia boss, we usually think about the great story of the Corleone crime family. Harlem also has a godfather. However, unlike the well-known character inspired by Puzo’s best-selling 1969 novel of the same name, the godfather of Harlem does really exist. As a prequel to American Gangster, Godfather of Harlem tells a real story about Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson, the infamous capo during the 1960s.

Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2 takes us on a memory train to the old days of Harlem. It is when Bumpy returns from 10 years in prison to find the territory he once ruled in shambles. The original series from Epix is really quite something that you will not find yourself yawning and dozing off midway.

Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2

Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2 is part of the thrilling criminal series from Epix. Overall, the film seems to retain an absolutely exciting storyline and very compelling characters. Admittedly, I do not know how many times I have got the most out of this movie. Being able to watch the godfather online in my free time does give me an adrenaline rush. Now let me enlighten you with the untold story behind the most sought-after episode of this gangster movie.

Storyline

Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2: The Nitty Gritty reveals the comeback of the black mafia boss. Bumpy has returned. However, Harlem now is under the control of the Italians, not his. In order to regain what he deserves, it is crucial to find a consistent source of heroin. However, drugs from the white interlopers are not what Bumpy wants, especially from Chin Gigante, Bumpy’s main foe.

During the opening minutes of the film, I feel like a Bumpy’s companion to a shady night box. He has a conversation with a black associate there. The old-timer’s idea is to make Harlem organized, like the ways the Italians have managed to reign the street. However, the other does not seem to appreciate this idea. After wishing him a happy birthday, the old dog decides to cut his throat in a matter of seconds.

Don’t teach an old dog new tricks. Bumpy always has his own solutions. He goes about his business by finding a consistent source of drugs, though it is quite challenging. At the same time, Chin pays for two corrupt cops with the sole purpose of putting his foe in jail again. The set-up is so perfect that Bumpy is arrested when visiting a potential Cuban pusher. Highly possible, Bumpy will be sent to Alcatraz again, but he meets Captain Gary D’alessandro.

Getting informed about his rogue detectives’ involvement with the white mafia boss, the Captain releases Bumpy then.

The detectives on Chin’s payroll seem to be the biggest threat to both Bumpy and the Captain. The enemy of an enemy tends to be a friend. An old but gold solution, thus, is more obvious than ever. Therefore, the two shake hands for a win-win partnership. While the Captain removes his threat, the black mafia boss has the high-quality source of heroin he needs: the dope in the police’s evidence locker.

Most Impressive Characters In The Series

Besides an exciting storyline, this show of mob theatrics has striven to satisfy crime drama fans thanks to the well-built characters. Let me single out some of the most interesting characters in the movie.

Vincent “The Chin” Gigante

As stated above, the American-Italian mobster is the main opponent of Bumpy. The two detest each other. For evidence, in Godfather of Harlem S1 E2, Bumpy comes to Chin’s colony and says: ‘You and me, will gonna be in a war until one of us is dead.’

Killing each other is not an easy thing, even if they want to. It is because both of them are protected by other crime families. They can do nothing but give an angry look at each other and throw a couple of insults.

Interestingly, I find that a nickname makes a gangster cooler and more ruthless. For example, the pseudo ‘Gigante’ seems to describe the great height and size of the mobster perfectly. Similarly, Bumpy refers to the bump at the back of his neck. Somehow, it reminds me of the scene when he slits one’s throat. Yuck!

Elise

This is Bumpy’s daughter. Despite appearing in a couple of scenes, this character has left an unforgettable impression on me. How ironic it is when a drug lord has a drug-addicted daughter? While Bumpy has a new family with his wife and daughter, Elise cannot do anything without heroin and lives a wretched life on the streets.

In Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2, there is an encounter between the father and his daughter. What can be more bitter when a dad sees his girl in rehab, suffering the tormenting effects of drugs.

Bumpy Johnson

Bumpy was the most notorious crime boss during the 1960s in America. Besides being the only colored one, he is also the only American boss among the great density of Italian capos.

In the series of Epix, Bumpy makes friends with most Italians. However, Gigante is an exception. As a wise man, Bumpy has himself surrounded by key people like celebrities or congressmen to make up a clean look. He also has the backup of Malcolm X, who helps him masquerade as a supporter of civil rights.

Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2 Review

With a solid 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, Godfather of Harlem opens up a real story about the legendary gangster Bumpy Johnson. Thanks to the ‘Narcos’ production team, the film has managed to fully present ruthless wars among crime families in America in the 1960s. The dark side of the underworld, police corruption, discrimination are what you will see in every episode of this thrilling drama.

What I appreciate most is the portrait of the great mafia boss. Bumpy is fully aware of the importance of power, but he also has a soft side. In Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2, viewers can clearly see Elise is one of his weaknesses. Bumpy can be a powerful godfather in the eyes of others. He can also have many soldiers risk their lives for his well-being. However, as a father, he takes care of Elise and will not forgive those who hurt his daughter.

“Dad, I’m high… Leave me alone.”

“I can’t.”

“He may be a big man in Harlem, but if he goes south of 110th Street, he’s just another n****r.” (Godfather of Harlem).

The Last Words

Godfather of Harlem Season 1 Episode 2 is a delight to lovers of mobster movies. It is an exciting TV show worthy of praise for presenting the history of that time. I find this TV series full of power, emotions, suspense, and action of the black fighting against white supremacy and racism.
